This Marathi movie and India's entry to the Oscars in 2009 has been on my watchlist for a while now. I saw it last week and was blown away.

This is the directorial debut of Paresh Mokashi and stars Nandu Mahadev as Dadasaheb Phalke, Vibhavari Deshpande as his wife Saraswati Phalke and Atharva Karve as his son Mahadev Phalke.

Dadasaheb had split up with his partner in a printing firm and becomes fascinated with the movies. In those days, silent movies were played for the Britishers on the life of Christ and other topics. Dadasaheb decides to make a movie of his own and travels to England to learn more about it. He was not someone rich and has to sell off his furniture at home and leave his pregnant wife alone. Once back, it is quite a task to convince people that the camera will not suck their soul and movies are just moving pictures. He also cannot get even a prostitute to act in the film since it was looked down upon. The movie is called Raja Harishchandra and was the first Indian film ever made. He gets the offer of making movies in England but turns it down to establish the Indian film industry.

What is commendable is that the movie is not sad or depressing. It is funny and does not linger upon the tragic parts. It is not serious and yet you can feel the kind of hardships Dadasaheb would have gone through.

I loved the movie. It is a must, must watch. And I watched it with English subtitles because I don't understand Marathi.

Run for your wife is a 1983 adult comedy play by Ray Cooney which claims to be the longest running play in the world. It has been adapted by Behroopiya Entertainers for the Indian audience. When it played at Epicentre, we booked the tickets. Despite the clichéd story, I went to watch it because of good reviews online.

The story is about a cab driver who has two wives and juggles two households. In today's times, a cab driver in Delhi being able to do that is in itself a big surprise. I mean, here we are trying to manage one household with double income. On top of it, one of the wives is a high class lady living in South Delhi. Umm, okay, REALLY?

That is not even the worst part about the play. It has women wearing loads of make up and everyone talking in Punjabi accents. Cringe.
We left within 20 minutes.

WORST PLAY EVER.

I have read articles and articles about the Aarushi Talwar case and Avirook Sen's book on the subject and am convinced that the parents did not get a fair trial. I am also inclined to believe they are innocent for the simple reason that- if I was to commit a murder, I wouldn't hide the bodies in my own house. Especially the servant's because then the blame could be pinned on him. And I definitely wouldn't leave a bottle with blood prints on the table in full view.

I was reading the reviews for this movie and everyone has mentioned that the movie tries to put forward two cases- one in which Talvars are guilty and another in which they are not. They also comment on how the movie is kind of biased and sympathetic to the Talwars.

Anyone who has gone through the details of what happened will naturally be sympathetic to the Talwars. A parent killing his/her child is a rarest of the rare case and hence it becomes the judiciary's responsibility to ensure that the evidence is water tight to prove them guilty.

Anyway, coming to the movie- it starts with Shruti's (Aarushi) death and covers everything that happens till the case is argued in the court. I don't think a 3 hour movie can cover every event and there is enough meat and drama in the investigation itself. Konkona Sen Sharma plays Nutan Tandon (based on Nupur Talwar) and Neeraj Kabi plays Ramesh Tandon (based on Rajesh Talwar). The reason the media started doling out conspiracy theories was that they didn't like it when Nupur Talwar gave an exclusive interview to NDTV. They pointed to the fact that she didn't cry on camera and hence, was the murderer. That part is missing in the movie. It feels like Konkona didn't know how to play the character. Should she be stoic but not too stoic but soft and yet not too soft? Neeraj Kabi does remind one of Rajesh Talwar or atleast what I have read of him. Irrfan Khan plays the first CBI officer who had put forward the theory through narco tests that the servants and compounder killed Shruti (Aarushi) and Khempal (Hemraj) but wasn't given enough time to find proof. He was then removed from the case and replaced by another guy who started investigating the Talwars/Talvars instead. Tabu plays Irrfan's wife but that track is unnecessary. Tabu is looking quite ugly because she has applied loads of make up to hide her wrinkles.

I found it painful to watch the movie and was hoping they had changed the ending or something. But that was not to be. Even with all its flaws the movie makes an impact. I think it could have been much, much better. Even a not-so-great Hollywood documentary would have been able to cover this case better but by Bollywood standards, it is a must watch.

A good job done by Meghna Gulzar and Vishal Bharadwaj. Now if only the courts would take note.

I watched this one a while back and so don't remember everything about it. Please bear with me.
This movie is a collection of 8 short stories which won as part of a contest. Some of the directors were mentored by Anand Gandhi, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikash Bahl and Imtiaz Ali.

Here are some of the short stories I remember and like:

- The story about a struggling actor who goes for numerous auditions. At the audition, he has to show a board to the camera with his name and contact number written on it. Even while asleep, he dreams of giving auditions. And one day, this lands him in trouble. A hilarious story though not a new one. I am pretty sure this used to be a WhatsApp joke once upon a time.

- The story about a ghost who comes "alive" while people are watching him on screen in the theatre. Imagine watching a ghost movie and suddenly the ghost is sitting next to you. What would you do? Click selfies, of course. Loved this one. Hilarious.

- What if the actor playing Ram ran off during the interval? How would Ramayana end? With Laxman saving Sita? With Ravana changing his mind about abducting Sita? With Sita saving herself? This and many more options are discussed in the green room when Ram scoots off. Funny.

- The story about a man planning a romantic gesture for his wife along with his grand kids only to have the wife die before she finds out.

- Another one was about 2 characters in a movie/play who run off into their own world and flirt with each other while the interval is on. Very creative- which means I didn't understand too much but it was kind of nice.

Such and many more. Worth a dekko. The movie is available for rent on google play and Itunes.

Few weeks back I was looking for something to watch on google play and rented this flick. Worst decision of my life.

The Bengali movie (with English subtitles) starts off with an old, fat, ugly, balding man admiring himself in the mirror. All the while, his maid is complaining to herself about him. He gets dressed and leaves the house with a book. His neighbour wishes him a happy birthday and the man rudely leaves. He then sits in the park and is reading the book. Sushmita Sen sits next to him on the bench and proceeds to share her problem. You get the idea that it has to do something with a lover. The man buys peanuts or chanas but does not offer them to Sushmita. I lost track for a few minutes of the movie after this. Then he gets drunk, comes home and lies down on his bed and starts shagging. He is shown shagging till he does not climax. At this point I turned off the movie because I realised I don't really care about this old, fat, ugly, balding man. And I definitely don't want to see him shagging. I don't care what the director wanted to show by that but this where I draw the line.

After reading the story on wikipedia I realise that turning this one off and saving my time was a good decision. You know what happens next? The man slips in the bathroom, is injured and taken to the hospital. And that is end of story 1. The best part- this story depicts Affection. There are four other stories like this.

Don't waste your time with this one. It is terrible. It is like that guy in top management who licked asses like a dog to get there. Oh wait, EVERYONE in top management is like that.

Zero rating- after sooooo long.

With all the Oscar noise right now, I decided to watch this movie. Many people think Killa should have been sent to the Oscars instead of Masaan.

Killa is a Marathi movie and I managed to find a good copy with subtitles.
It has been directed by Avinash Arun and stars Amruta Subash, Archit Deodhar, Parth Bhalerao, Gaurish Gawande and Atharva Upasni.

Amruta's (I cannot recall her character's name in the movie) husband passes away and she shifts to a Konkan village with her son from Pune for a change in scene. She works in a government job and has just been promoted. Her son- Chinmay (Archit) is not happy about this shift because he left his mama (mother's brother) and favourite cousin behind along with friends. He was also closer to his father. The movie shows both their struggles to come to terms in their life at this new place.

It sounds good.... except.... there is no story to it and most of the things are left unresolved. The movie ends with them packing up and shifting again.

I have watched a lot of art movies- specially the old ones starring Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil etc. The difference was that those movies had a very good story. Today's movies have a lame script and then the directors proceed to make movies for festival audiences.

An hour into the movie, I wasn't sure where the movie is going... what is going to happen... will something even happen next? And I cannot appreciate a flick about a few days in someone's life in a new village when I have seen Boyhood. Come on. Boyhood is about 18 years of someone's life shot over those many years. Killa is nothing in comparison.

It well made, the scenes are beautiful and actors are great specially Amruta. She is perfect as the Marathi mother who is facing issues in her new job and has to deal with a cranky kid.

Atleast Masaan had a story, no matter how weak. This one does not have even that.

I try and travel by Air India while going to my destination (and Indigo while returning because I like to reach home without delays) because they still have the TV screens on their flights. Most of the times, I pick something I have never seen before. I don't know what attracted me about the The Artist but I started playing it while travelling to Kolkata.

It is a silent movie, without dialogues, though it has background music. It may seem strange and boring but this is one of the best movies I have seen and brimming with creativity.

The movie has been written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius and stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo in lead roles.

The story is about a successful silent movie actor George Valentin (Jean). When the talkies arrive, he mocks them thinking nobody would want to watch that. But he is proved wrong.
He puts all his savings into a silent movie while an upcoming actor Peppy Miller's (Berenice) talkies is a hit.
George loses everything- his house, his wife, his art etc and starts living in a tiny apartment with his dog and driver.

Peppy and Jean had met when she was a background dancer in his movie and he had helped her out. She is affectionate towards him and helps him out as he descends into madness.

The movie ends on a good note, of course.

The story is nothing I haven't see before but to execute it without dialogues is applause worthy. I loved this movie and wasn't bored for even a minute. The lead actors are simply brilliant.

YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW.

We watched this play 2 weeks back when Anu Menon tweeted about it. What would I do without twitter? This is part 2 of One on One and has 8 sketches/monologues. Basically, each sketch has only 1 person performing.

Sketch 1 :
I'm every woman
Written by : Ayeesha Menon
Directed by : Faezeh Jalali
Performed by : Anu Menon
Anu Menon plays the mother of 2 kids and the entire sketch is about her entire day. Anu is brilliant. The sketch is so good that no woman would want to become a mother after watching it.

Sketch 2 :
Nobody
Written by : Rajit Kapur and Arghya Lahiri
Directed by : Arghya Lahiri
Performed by : Rajit Kapur
Rajit Kapur's dentist passes away in an accident in Nepal. He goes to attend the funeral and narrates all the trouble everyone has to go through to bring the body back to India and give it a decent funeral. It highlights all the unnecessary bureaucracy in India.
Brilliant sketch. Rajit is so damn good.

Sketch 3 :
TC Rasbihari
Written by : Ashok Mishra
Directed by : Rajit Kapur
Performed by : Gopal Datt
This is a sketch about a guy who is a TC on the train and keeps getting into trouble. Decent sketch.

Sketch 4 :
Majnu
Written by : Hussain Dalal
Directed by : Akarsh Khurana
Performed by : Hussain Dalal and Sumeet Vyas
This is the only sketch which has 2 people. It is about war and love, India and Pakistan. Sumeet Vyas (he was in Permanent Roommates) is quite good in this one.

Sketch 5 :
DJ Elvis
Written and directed by : Rahul daCunha
Performed by : Neil Bhoopalam
Soundtrack by : Ameya Naik
This was an ok ok sketch about a DJ.

Sketch 6:
Dulhaniya
Written by : Sumeet Vyas
Directed by : Puja Sarup
Performed by : Shikha Talsania
This is a sketch about a woman who has cold feet while getting married. I loved this sketch. Shikha stole the show. It was so funny.

Sketch 7 :
Khoona, Pasina... Action!
Written by : Ashish Jagtiani
Directed by : Akarsh Khurana
Performed by : Sumeet Vyas
This is about a first time producer who gets treated like shit by everyone. Sumeet Vyas is quite funny.

What I liked about all the sketches was that even when they are funny, there is an underlying pathos to it. And all of them are based on real life. We could we anyone of these people.

Do not miss this one when it comes to your city.

I didn't know what steroids do and I didn't care. I am never taking them. But this documentary directed by Christopher Bell is very interesting. As someone who is interested in fitness and reads quite a bit about it, this documentary was an eye opener about a lot of things.

Christopher Bill and his 2 brother- Smelly and Mad Dog are into fitness and wrestling in a big way. Smelly and Mad Dog take steroids while Christopher is confused and decides to find out the truth. I need to admit though- at no point does the documentary talk about the side effects of steroids which are infertility, excessive hair, acne, liver disease, heart disease, increased aggression, depression etc. But, as a neutral audience who knew nothing steroids, I saw enough to want to stay away from that stuff.

Here are some things that blew my mind:

You cannot look seriously ripped without steroids. And seriously ripped means looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger did when he won Mr World title

Most athletes use steroids. They may not all be anabolic steroids (which are banned) but they use something or the other which gives them an edge. Basically, if you are not on something you lose out. Makes you wonder- what is right and what is wrong.

There have been times when athletes have been caught using steroids but no action has been taken because it was "inadvertent use" meaning the athlete didn't use it with the intent of enhancing his/her performance.

Everything has side effects and most people on steroids cite this reason as a justification. For example, I take whey protein which also has side effects. So, why ban steroids only?

The documentary also talks about other ways people try to "win". Students take a drug which makes them finish their homework faster. Are they cheating? An Olympic cyclist has created an altitude chamber outside his house where he sleeps at night. The chamber increases the products of blood cells (don't remember which- red or white) which makes him faster. Is that cheating? If the goal is to win and everyone is "cheating" in someway, what is your stand?

Photographers were interviewed who admitted to make the "before" and "after" weight loss pics in a few hours. That is how long it takes.

The whole industry is unregulated because of a law change in Utah where 30% of these products are manufactured. So, there is no law according to which the manufacturer has to declare all the ingredients used in whey or pre workout or steroids or anything. As Chris shows, he can hire migrant laborers, buy ingredients locally, make them at home and sell them at a premium legally.

In the end, Chris's brother who was on steroids passes away and I guess that says it all.

A good watch. I liked it.

It is a trend these days to appreciate "non commercial" films to seem smart. What will be your intellect level otherwise? Nothing else can explain why critics have unanimously given this movie a good rating and it is running to packed houses. Hell, even we felt guilty about walking out mid way instead of acting like we give a damn.

Manjhi is based on true story. Dashrath Manjhi, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, breaks a mountain for 20 years to make a small path so that his villagers can access the next village easily. He does this when his wife Phaguniya Devi, played by Radhika Apte, falls down a mountain and dies.

This is a brilliant story and could have been directed in so many ways and Ketan Mehta, the director, decides to make it a love story. Fair enough. Except what is there in the story except that Manjhi broke the mountain for 20 years. What are you going to show the audience for 2 hours? Ketan Mehta adds below elements to fill the time:

Caste ism

Poverty

Love story

Sex

Zamindari system

Famine

Etc etc etc

And this is only till the interval.

As I sit and think about the flick, so many "practical" questions come to mind.

Why did Manjhi wait for his wife to die before he decided to start breaking the mountain? I am pretty sure other people died too

The mountain is protected by the law and not supposed to be broken. Even tigers and lions are dangerous, let us kill them all.

Why were people living in a village that remote? Why couldn't they just move?

If Manjhi loved his wife so much, why did he let her climb the dangerous mountain? Why didn't he move back the city where it was safer?

What did the poor mountain do to deserve this treatment?

I don't get it.... we want roads but we don't want the government to cut trees or mountains to build them. For once, when they don't cut up the mountain, we have a problem. Make up your mind, people.... development or environment? And no, both don't go hand in hand. Not yet, anyway

Manjhi was clearly mentally ill and needed treatment instead of accolades.

I am not impressed, more like mind fucked. This is a boring, useless and badly made flick. Nawazuddin and Radhika Apte's love making scenes are as yucky as Ajay Devgan and Kareena's lip lock. Eww-worthy.

I have a simple rule of thumb- I avoid movies where I can predict what is going to happen. And that is why I don't watch action movies. We watched Mission Impossible because KC's friend was staying with us and expressed an interest in watching it. He is a fan and has seen all the parts while I haven't even bothered to watch the first part itself.

I also fell asleep once I realized there is no sex and Tom Cruise does not strip. I always thought the action was just foreplay for something better coming up. Apparently, that isn't how action movies work. Or maybe am confusing action with porn.

The movie starts with everyone trying to get a package off a plane using satellites and technology and what not. But nobody can. Except.... you guessed it right. Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise, does not need technology and shit. He wears a suit and runs after the plane, gets on the plane and gets the package off. At this point I should have walked out but couldn't.

The rest of the movie has Ethan trying to impress and defend Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) even though she is from the enemy camp. I get it. When we want to get laid, we want to get laid... even if it is with someone trying to kill us. We have all been there. But do it on your own time. Don't make me spend 400 buck for that shit.
I won't even get into the rest of the story because it is not important. Just watch a Rohit Shetty movie for better action sequences.
This one sucks.

I read good reviews online and we watched this flick on Friday night. I knew the movie was a thriller of some kind but didn't know if it was a ghost movie or not.

The flick stars Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton. It has been written, produced and directed by Edgerton.

The scariest part about the movie were the bunch of girls in the theater who would scream in anticipation of the action that never really happens.
This is supposed to be a psychological thriller- whatever that means.

Simon Callen (Jason) and Robyn Callen (Rebecca) are married and moving to LA from Chicago. Simon has switched jobs and they buy a nice glass house in the suburbs. Robyn is dealing with some health issues but they are never really spelled out. She has had a miscarriage before and is trying to have a baby.
They bump into Simon's classmate Gordo (Joel) from school at a store. Gordo starts dropping by to their house when Robyn is alone and even leaves thoughtful gifts for them. Robyn does not mind but Simon is bothered by it. When they are invited for dinner at his house, Simon asks him to leave them alone. That is when creepy things start happening- someone poisons their fish, their dog goes missing etc etc etc. Robyn also finds out stuff about Simon's past which leaves her disgusted. The end is kind of weird.

The problem with the movie is that you are not really sure if Gordo is the one doing these weird things or is it all in Robyn's head. If Edgerton had shown Gordo as the one actually harassing them, it would have been creepier. I would have liked the movie more if it was all in Robyn's head and Gordo was just a creepy but nice guy.

As things stand, we walked out wondering what the hell just happened. If the same movie was made in Bollywood we would have trashed it but since it is Hollywood and audience's taste levels are mediocre it has good ratings online.

I watched "Monster" eons back and was moved by everyone else. After watching all the documentaries on Aileen Wuornos (read the review here and here) and knowing atleast half the truth, I am dismayed.

The movie has been written and directed by Patty Jenkins. It stars Christina Ricci as Selby Wall and Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos.

Let me first get my negative thoughts out of the way:

The movie is based only on the killings. It does not cover Aileen's life before or after that period. We get to know about her unhappy, abused filled life in bits and parts when she talks about it. I am very, very surprised the director didn't want to cover it

Why would you call a movie "Monster" unless it is based on a monster. KC remarked "that is a terrible name for a movie". Yes, it is. Specially because Aileen had shades of gray and the sad part is nobody cares.

Aileen was on death row for 10 years. Does the story end when she is given the death sentence? There is so much more that happened after. But then of course, the audience wouldn't really be interested in how she was manipulated by everyone around her or how she was mentally ill by the time she was given the lethal injection.

Selby Wall- Aileen's lover (in real life her name was Tyria Moore) is portrayed very differently from Tyria. She is shown to be nice, young, prone to tantrums, someone who pushed Aileen back into prostitution when they ran out of money but subtly. The way I see it, Tyria was/is a manipulator. She knew exactly what Aileen was doing. There were even reports of her at the crime scene which means could have been involved in the murders but none of that is shown in the movie. It is pretty obvious, Tyria got some money from the movie deal and shows her in a mostly positive light.

The movie only shows Aileen killing her clients. Is the movie saying that she killed every man who picked her up for sex after Vincent Cory's (in real life - it was Richard Mallory who tried to rape her and he was the first victim) murder? Does that mean she slept with only 6-7 men in that one year? Hard to believe since she earned money through prostitution. Maybe, she slept with many men and 6-7 of them were killed because they tried to rape her or pissed her off. We don't know because Aileen's lawyer didn't care to get to the bottom of the truth and neither did the director.

Of course, there are positives:

Charlize Theron is amazing. I have seen the documentaries and Charlize got Aileen's look and mannerisms to the "T". Sometimes, when actors play a "character". you can see they are "acting". Like, Farhan Akhtar in "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag". Throughout the movie, I could see Farhan "playing" Milkha Singh. You don't for a moment forget that it is him. Not in the case of Charlize. She is Aileen through and through.

Christina Ricci as Selby Wall is superb. She plays the character so well, which is very different from real life Tyria Moore. Christina is pretty, sexy, young, confused and she brings out the shades of gray quite well. She is nice but selfish, in love but practical enough to side with the police. You don't end up blaming Selby but you know she is not a nice person. In fact, Aileen is a more loyal person than Selby. You would rather be friends with Aileen rather than Selby.

If you don't know or care about Aileen's real story, this movie is great. Unfortunately, I do know and it makes me sad that the director only covered the most controversial parts that the audience would want to watch. There are no layers to it and it is very far from what actually happened.

This is part 1 to the documentary- Life and Death of a Serial killer. Check out review here.

Aileen Wuronos, also called the first female serial killer of USA, killed seven men in one year. She had help from her lesbian partner Tyria, who was never prosecuted because she helped the cops get a confession from Aileen.

The movie is about how everyone around Aileen tried to milk the situation for money. Below are the players in this documentary by Nick Broomfield.

Tyria- She is not interviewed directly but it is obvious she was involved in the murders and managed to go scot-free because she got Aileen to confess. There is conjecture that she was part of the movie deals along with the cops.

The cops- Nick interviews a cop who quit the force and he talks about being harassed and being asked to shut up about Aileen's case. Something is not right. The speculation is that the cops the cops sold off her story for movie deals

Aileen gets adopted legally by Arlene Pralle who bullshits about how she prayed for Aileen for hours and was guided by Jesus to adopt her. Arlene pushed Aileen into entering the "guilty" plea instead of the earlier self defense. She also negotiates with Nick for $25,000 for an interview with Aileen. He ultimately brings it down to $10,000 but then Arlene refuses to give the interview. Things fall apart between Aileen and Arlene when the former feels like the latter is using her.

Steve Glazer who is Aileen's lawyer. She recruits him when she sees his tacky ad on TV. The lawyer seems like a whack job and it is obvious he is not upto the job. He pushes Aileen to enter a "guilty" plea which leads to a death sentence.

By the end of it, Aileen is quite frustrated. Her only companion- Tyria betrays her. The cops are out to make money. Her adopted mother is a gold digger. Her lawyer does not give a shit. Basically, she is on death row and has nobody to turn to. This also explains why she keeps blaming everyone but herself for the way her life turned out, in the next documentary. It is a frustrating place to be in and without anyone's support.

Worth a watch. This documentary is an eye opener. Everyone except for Aileen comes out looking sleazy. Quite an achievement considering she killed 7 men.

I watched this movie on the flight yesterday. I had read decent reviews when it released. According to the promotions before it released, the movie was supposedly based on the Aarushi Talwar case. In fact, the Talwars had gone to court to stay its release.

The movie stars Kay Kay Menon, Ashish Vidyarthi, Tisca Chopra, Mita Vasisht, Kunal Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar and Sakshi Sem.

It starts with Ayesha Mahajan (Sakshi) being found dead in her house in the morning by the governess Remi (Ashwini) when only she and Ayesha's father Dr Sachin (Ashish) are in the house. The mother- Dr Arti arrives from Pune in the morning to discover cops at the house and her daughter dead.

*Logical question 1 : Why was she not informed immediately about her daughter's death? I mean, she has a phone na*

The cops arrest Dr Sachin because he has scratch marks on his body and the cut on Ayesha's neck looks like it was made by a doctor.

*At this stage I wanted to turn it off but I decided to wait for Kay Kay Menon's entry*

The case is transferred to CBI and CBI Officer Sunil Paraskar (Kay Kay Menon) starts investigating.

Sunil comes with lots of flaws:

He likes to eat walnuts and that is quite annoying

His wife pressurizing him to take bribes is another major irritant and does not contribute to the story at all

He works only with one assistant. Both of them go everywhere and for everything. I didn't know CBI works in a twosome on any case

Anyway, the movie has a lot of twists and turns and the person who is not investigated or suspected at all turns out to be the killer. Which is weird. I don't understand the point of wasting my 2 hours over an investigation. In the end, conveniently, Sunil knows exactly what happened to Ayesha even though they didn't show him investigating half of it.

Also, all the witnesses or clues end up dying and Sunil does not bother to investigate who killed them.

Terrible movie. Tisca is very screechy in the bits and parts. Kay Kay Menon is quite annoying. Thankfully, there are no songs or item numbers. The whole movie is shot in dark houses. I don't know why there are no lights in the houses and why are there white curtains drawn even at 6 am.

But the most annoying thing is the racism. A Bihari talks with a Bihari accent and a Marathi with a Marathi accent. Because how else will we know that someone is from Bihar or Maharashtra?

Avoid.

I watched this documentary on Netflix. It is about Aileen Wuornos- the first female serial killer to be given capital punishment. Have you seen the movie Monster? Remember Charlize Theron? That character is based on Aileen. This is the 2nd documentary made my Nick Broomfield (I haven't seen the first) on Aileen.

Nick is called as a witness after his first documentary where he shows Aileen's lawyer being high when consulting with her. The documentary covers the time till she is given a lethal injection and dies for her crimes.

A brief about her life- Aileen's mother abandoned her and her brother when she was few months old and her maternal grandparents took care of her. Her father was imprisoned for being a pedophile and he committed suicide in prison. Apparently, her grandfather sexually abused Aileen when she was a kid and her grandfather's friend raped her. She started exchanging sex for money and cigarettes at a very young age and became pregnant at 14. Her son was given up for adoption after which she was thrown out of the house. She spent the rest of her life prostituting and hitch hiking. She met Tyria Moore (the character played by Christina Ricci) at a lesbian bar and they started having an affair. Aileen killed 7 men in a span of 1 year. She was caught by the cops when Tyria got her to confess on the phone. Tyria had been her partner in some of the killings but was not prosecuted because she negotiated a deal with the cops.

In her plea, Aileen claims to have been raped by these 7 men and she killed them in self defense. She changes her story later and confesses to killing them in cold blood to rob them. When Nick's camera is supposedly off, she tells him it was actually in self defense but she is tired of being on death row for 10 years and just wants to die.

This is a disturbing documentary despite Nick's monotonous and boring commentary in the background. Aileen is insane, this is quite obvious from her interviews. She led a hard life and there was no hope of turning it around. Also, she does not feel responsible for the murders at all. There is no remorse. She kept blaming society, media, the justice system, the cops for the life she led.

I don't know what to think. Should an insane person be given capital punishment? But then again, if someone cannot even differentiate between right and wrong, can they even be rehabilitated?

A decent documentary and am going to watch the first one.

I had the misfortune of watching this flick yesterday. I had read "ok ok" reviews online and didn't want to waste my money but KC was keen on watching it. So I downloaded it.

The Bollywood movie is based on a Malayalam movie and is supposedly brilliant. No such luck in the Bollywood version.

The flick has been directed by Nishikant Kamath and stars Ajay Devgan, Tabu and Shriya Saran in lead roles. They are supported by Rajat Kapoor, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav.

The first half is a sleep walk. It is cliched and stupid. You see Vijay (Ajay Devgan) with his wife Nandini (Shriya) and 2 daughters- Anju (Ishita)- the elder one and adopted and Annu (Mrunal). being a family from Sooraj Barjatya's era. To show how healthy the family is, we are told that Vijay and Nandini have sex despite being married. It is quite nauseating. The idea of Ajay Devgan having sex with any woman itself is nauseating.

Anyway, things go downhill when Anju goes on a trip and bumps into Sam- Meera's son. Sam is a pervert and loves taking videos of girls. He hides his phone in the women's bathroom and shoots Anju taking a bath. Then he comes to her house and proceeds to blackmail her. She informs her step mother- Nandini and both women confront him in the house when Vijay is not around.

Here is what would happen normally- both women overpower him, take the phone, call the cops or call Vijay or destroy the video.

This is what happens in Bollywood - Nandini falls at his feet with cliched dialogues like "Bhagwan ke liye hume chod do. Humne tumhara kya bigada hai?"
I was literally trying not to puke at this scene.

Anju hits him with a stick and he falls dead.

Vijay comes home and decides to hide all evidence and get rid of the body. Everything is going according to plan except his enemy- a police officer sees him in Sam's car.

When Inspector General Meera (Tabu) cannot contact her son for 3 weeks (yes, 3 weeks. She is definitely not an Indian mother), she starts investigating. Vijay and his family are called for questioning, they are harassed, beaten, abused... but they do not break.
Please note here that at no point does Meera investigate anyone else. She also does not know why Vijay would harm or kidnap her son. There is no motive and yet 30 minutes of the movie are spent on harassing the family. Just like a regular Indian cop.

Rajat Kapoor plays Tabu's husband very half heartedly. I can literally hear him thinking "This is torture but am going to sleep walk because money. So much money".

Even when Rajat and Tabu find out that Sam took videos of Anju taking a bath, they don't look shocked or upset or devastated.

I am not sure what people liked in this shitty movie. I was glad when it was over. The idea is good but the execution is terrible and unconvincing.
Avoid the movie and avoid the people who liked it.

I watched this flick on google play over the weekend. The movie has been directed by Aparna Sen and she has written it along with Ranjan Ghosh.
I am Aparna's fan and have watched 36 Chowringhee Lane (one of my favourite movies), Mr and Mrs Iyer, 15 Park Avenue and The Japanese Wife.

Iti Mrinalini is a Hindi movie also but I watched the orginal one in Bengali with English subtitles.

The story is nothing new- it is about a movie actress and her life. It starts with Mrinalini (Aparna Sen) writing her suicide note. She has decided to end her life and spends the night remembering all the major events of her life. Does she kill herself in the morning? You have to watch it to find out.

I could not help but compare this movie to the all out commercial flick "Heroine". Kareena's character in the same comes across as cheap and insane. Madhur Bhandarkar has filled the movie with cliches.

Iti Mrinalini presents the unorthodox life of an actress in the most beautiful manner possible and without judgement. The younger Mrinalini is played by Konkona Sen Sharma. She has affairs, has a daughter out of wedlock, loses people closest to her to betrayal and death and after Satyajit Ray's death quits acting. Till Imitiaz (Priyanshu Chatterjee), a much younger director, tempts her with a great role and she decides to take up acting again.

I loved the movie. Konkona Sen is a talent powerhouse, Priyanshu was a surprise. I had no idea he was so good looking. Rajat Kapoor as Konkona's lover is superb, Kaushik Sen as Chintan- Mrinalini's best friend is brilliant.
The weakest link though was Aparna as the older Mrinalini. I found the reason for her suicide quite flimsy and felt like she could have acted better. I didn't know what she was feeling and why. What did she think of her life at the end? Good? Bad? Ugly? Any regrets?

But overall, it is a must watch.

Last night I was looking for something interesting to watch- nothing dark though and I came across this documentary on Netflix.
Wow!!! This is going to sound very ironical- this documentary is about our right to privacy and am the least private person on this planet. Or am I?

This piece has been directed by Cullen Hoback who was crazy enough to go to Mark Zuckerberg's house, film him, pretend to turn off the camera and then film him- just like he does to all of us.

It starts with asking people if they have read the terms and conditions on any website. We all agree to terms and conditions before we can sign up on any website- facebook. twitter, google, itunes, apple store etc etc and yet nobody has ever read them. And yet, I always read the terms of the rent agreement or job agreement or any other agreement. Why not this one?
For 3 reasons:
- It is tedious and I won't understand half of it
- I cannot change it. Will I refuse to sign up on a website because a term rankles me? No.
- There is no guarantee the terms will not change after a few months with or without my knowledge

The documentary covers how the USA government spies on its citizens. Even in India, it happens. There are enough cases of Shiv Sena getting people arrested for posting anti-Shiv Sena tweets/posts. The recent ruling of SC has been quite a relief in this regard.

Our digital data (which cannot be erased once it is out there even when we delete accounts) is being sold to advertising agencies. We all know that facebook is following us everywhere. How else do I see ads for the exact same product on facebook that I have checked out on a shopping site? It is scary. I hate ads. Ads are why am online. Youtube's ad blocker has been a major relief, I use unofficial twitter apps to avoid the sponsored ads and get my news online so I don't have to open the newspaper and read more ads. The digital space is where I don't want these ads to follow me.

The documentary tries to locate a person who has made searches like "how to kill your wife", "decapitated body pictures" and more such gross stuff. Guess who he turns out to be? A writer on a crime TV show. Imagine getting arrested or judged for what you search online. Online is where the boundaries of right and wrong change. Is trolling someone wrong in real life? Yep, it is called harassment. Online? Nope, it is something to be proud of. I was fighting with someone on facebook last night because I was bored and couldn't find something to watch online. Would I have done that in real life? Not in a million years. We say stuff we don't really mean online. Or maybe we say stuff we actually mean, online. Same thing.

These days nothing is really private. As soon as I buy a new number, I start receiving promotional messages or calls even though am on DOT's "Do not disturb" list. Threatening to sue and screaming at the caller helps. But how does my phone number get there? This happens even before I have updated it online. It is obvious telecom companies are selling our data.

There is no privacy and yet, there should be. I should decide how much you know about me and how that data is used. In India, we are still miles away from what happens in the USA. Our internet penetration is low and people don't use social media apart from facebook. Which is good. Our employers are not going through our blogs, facebook, instagram, twitter accounts before recruiting us or promoting us. Not yet, anyway. But with facebook and google, that is bound to change... it is already changing.

I find it hilarious when someone calls a company "ethical". No company on this planet is "ethical"- whether it is Indian or MNC or even a start up. The objective is to make money and make profits. Money and ethics don't go together. They just don't. It is as simple as that. Google is here to make money and advertising is a big source of income for them. You may admire the organization, they may write books and books about what a great organization they are but they are selling our data for money.

This documentary is a MUST watch.

I watched this documentary on Netflix the other day. It is about the modelling industry in USA but mirrors the one in any country.

Directed by Brent Huff and written by Brent and Pete Sepenuk, it interviews beauty pageant winner Kelly Anderson, make up artist Jo Baker, actress Dawn Ann Billings etc etc.

Everyone knows what a model needs to become successful- she/he needs to have "it" but nobody can define what "it" is. And that was quite a shocker for me. We all have job descriptions, we know what skills are required to make us successful in our jobs but in the modelling industry, you could be skinny, pretty, blonde, tall and be told that "there are too many women with your look in the industry". I had never thought of the modelling industry that way. Most of the women end up feeling ugly because all their flaws are discussed and they become insecure. You need a skin thicker than a rhino's to survive. Also, most of the women hardly make money because their expenses are so high.

And even if you are pretty, your bodies/faces on magazines get photoshopped. I was reading the other day how Shilpa Shetty, Chitrangaha Singh and few others were complaining about their magazine covers getting photoshopped. Seriously? They are the prettiest women in the industry today.
Some of the women in the industry talk about how they never ate- carrots for one month, pineapples for another month, so they could stay skinny.

And on top of all that, they are called "dumb". The modelling industry is a terrible place and kudos to those men and women who don't just survive here but manage to make it to the top.
Another thing I didn't know- it isn't the models who want to be skinny, it is the designers because they design clothes for the skinny and want women to fit into their clothes.

I liked this documentary. It isn't the best but it isn't dark and dreary. Most of the people in it are happy and laugh at their modelling days.

I watched this movie last night with my colleague. Don't ask me why we watched this one. It was the only one playing at a decent hour- after work but not too late.
The movie stars Olivia Taylor Dudley, Dougray Scott, John Patrick Amedori and Michael Pena.

This horror movie is about a young girl Angela (Olivia) who lives with her boyfriend Pete (John) and her father (Dougray) comes to visit them on her birthday. A cut on her hand and a raven flying around start a chain of events. People start killing themselves and she starts acting weird. On the advice of a priest (Michale), Angela is put in a mental institution for evaluation. Things get worse and two priests from the Vatican realize that she has been possessed by anti- Christ- the middleman for Satan. One of the priests comes down for an exorcism but everyone except the priest (Michael) get killed. Angela then starts doing miracles by healing people and getting famous- just like Jesus.
What happens next? Wait for part 2.

This is such a sad movie and not scary at all. I don't watch too many horror movies because I get scared. Paranormal Activity is the scariest flick I have seen and I couldn't sleep for 2-3 nights after that. The feeling that this could happen to normal people in a normal house was just too much. They should never have shown the backstory in the next part. It was so much scarier that way.

There is nothing scary about Vatican Tapes. I knew what was going to happen and when. It was almost funny. The entire story sucks except for the twist in the end.

Though I don't have too many hopes from part 2, am going to watch it out of curiosity.

I watched this documentary yesterday on Netflix. It shows the modelling industry where underage models from underdeveloped nations are sent to the developing nations with dreams of big bucks.
The documentary has been directed by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin and stars Ashley Arbaugh, Rachel Blais, Tigran Khachatrian and Nadya Vall.

Nadya is a 13 year old in a small town in Siberia. She has 2 younger brothers and her parents are poor. Ashley Arbaugh is a scout and travels to third world countries looking for models for the Japanese market.
They are very specific about what they need- someone who is young, as young as 12/13 years of age, looks very innocent, has tiny breasts and narrow hips. Just typing that out makes me sick. She spots Nadya and offers her a contract which mentions that "gaining even 1 cm on the hips or breasts or waist will be a reason for termination of contract" and that the "contract terms can change on a day to day basis". Nadya is sent off to Japan alone and she does not speak English or Japanese. She is guaranteed that she will be given atleast 2 jobs and even more if the Japanese market likes her in addition to $8000. In fact, that is part of the visa policy in Japan.
Nadya arrives in Japan and starts doing the rounds of agencies for casting because there is no job waiting for her. Everyday she faces a series of rejections. 3 weeks later, there is only one photoshoot for which she does not get paid and she leaves Japan $2000 in debt which her poor parents will have to pay.
Another girl with her- Rachel is actually sent back even earlier because she gains 2 cm.
Tigran is the guy who runs the model agency in Russia and Ashley is a former model turned scout. Both of them sound absolutely psycho. They go around committing the world to 13 year old girls and white washing reality.

I was shocked by this documentary. There are so many ways for a woman to be taken for a ride.

This isn't an in depth documentary so very basic questions don't get answered. Are these girls deliberately getting taken for a ride? Is this an industry thing or a one off case?

But all in all, it is a decent and shocking watch.

It has been a weekend filled with terrible movies. Wait, does that mean KC is my lucky charm when it comes to movies? Damn it. This is not good news.
KC and his friend R are minion fans... so much so that they keep spamming me on fb with the minion stickers. While I don't even remember them from Despicable Me. We wanted to watch this movie but there has not been enough time. I watched it on Friday evening alone.

The movie is a prequel and shows that the minions were the earliest guys on the planet. They were forever in search of a villain to serve and it always ended up in the villain getting killed or pissed with them because of their histrionics. The 3 minions- Bob, Kevin and Stuart set off from their home to look for the world's greatest villain and come across Scarlet at Villain-Con and are picked to be her "minions".

I left after that because I was so bored. I love animated movies but this one is neither funny nor cute. Even though the plot sounds nice, it is terrible on screen. I am still baffled by how such cute creatures can be made boring. It takes special talent, doesn't it?

In the olden days, non-commercial or art movies were made with a social message. These days, they are made because of the following reasons:

So a newbie director can be taken seriously. Fact is, the new guy will not be able to make a commercial movie with top stars so this is a good way to get some fame

The top production houses are making movies with the stars. The content based movies get funded by Phantom films. Where does that leave other production houses? With movies like Masaan

The movie is sent to one of the film festivals where it may or may not be appreciated. Who knows, right? For marketing, make the known face wear clothes by the top designer and promote it everywhere

I have a bone to pick with this movie specially because of all the hype and the good ratings. It is as if the critics are too scared to speak the truth. How is it possible that everyone has appreciated the movie? How?

Any good movie has below:

A good plot

A great cast

Everything else is a filler. Masaan fails on the first count and only Vicky Kaushal's acting saves the latter from being a total disaster.

Masaan refers to the ghats of North India where dead bodies are burned. There are 3 stories in the flick.

Devi (Richa Chadda) and her friend Piyush meet at a hotel to sleep with each other. They are caught by the cops during a raid and Piyush commits suicide. Devi's father- Pathak (Sanjay Mishra) is called to the station and is harassed for the next 3 months for money to "manage" the case.

Deepak Chaudhary (Vicky Kaushal) is from a low caste family whose job it is to burn the dead bodies. He is studying engineering along with helping his father with the job. He falls in love with a girl- Shaalu (Shwetha Tripathi) from an upper caste family. Their love story ends tragically.

Jhonta (Nikhil Sahni) is a child who helps Pathak at the shop. He starts diving into the water for a competition where people bet on the kid who will search for the maximum number of coins in the river Ganga and almost dies.

In the end, Deepak and Devi meet in Allahabad and that is where the movie ends. I guess it means, they fall in love and are happy together. Or not.

Here are my problems with the movie:

There is nothing new in the story. In fact, the plot is terrible.

The director- Neeraj Ghaywan, has tried to make the movie as boring as possible. There isn't a hint of happiness in Devi or Pathak's life.

Devi is the worst character of all. I knew exactly what Deepak was feeling and going through but I had no idea what Devi was doing and why. I don't know if the characterization was faulty or Richa Chadda didn't know how to portray the role

What was the point of Jhonta's storyline?

What I liked about the movie:

Vicky Kaushal is quite a find. What an amazing actor. Did anyone else notice that none of the hype and promotions have Vicky in it? I only saw Richa everywhere and Shweta at some places

The song "Tu kisi rail si"... amazing

The Benaras set up but only because most movies have the big town set up and I miss seeing small towns on screen

I did not like the movie... at all and I actually like art/non-commercial cinema. This movie is all hype and no substance.

This is a documentary I watched on Netflix. Directed and written by Andrew Morgan, it is about the fashion industry. It talks about below:

The terrible working conditions of factory workers in countries like Bangladesh and Cambodia where the wages are 10$ per month

The wastage generated while making clothes

The impact on land due to fertilizers and by growing BT cotton

The impact on the environment by the clothes which are thrown away or given away to charity. There is no way to dispose them because we buy clothes more frequently these days generating more wastage

What it does not cover:

A solution to the problem. Should we stop buying clothes? Can they be made environment friendly? How can wages of factory workers/sweatshops be regulated? Etc Etc Etc

The views of the fashion industry experts. There is an interview with Stella McCartney who is very vague about things and does not have a solution

Even though this documentary is not a complete picture about the problem, it is an eye opener. I have never thought about how clothes are made and how they are disposed off while buying them which is sort of stupid. If am careful about what I eat, why am I not careful about what I put over my body? Do I need an overflowing closet? The more clothes I buy, the more garbage there is in the world. Not to mention that some young lady is underpaid to make them in a third world country.

This documentary has definitely made me think and I resolve not to shop anymore this year. Unless I NEED to. I am not allowed to shop anymore because I WANT to or am bored or I just feel like spending money.

Must watch for everyone.
