Manjhi The Mountain Man

It is a trend these days to appreciate "non commercial" films to seem smart. What will be your intellect level otherwise? Nothing else can explain why critics have unanimously given this movie a good rating and it is running to packed houses. Hell, even we felt guilty about walking out mid way instead of acting like we give a damn. 

Manjhi is based on true story. Dashrath Manjhi, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, breaks a mountain for 20 years to make a small path so that his villagers can access the next village easily. He does this when his wife Phaguniya Devi, played by Radhika Apte, falls down a mountain and dies. 

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

I have a simple rule of thumb- I avoid movies where I can predict what is going to happen. And that is why I don't watch action movies. We watched Mission Impossible because KC's friend was staying with us and expressed an interest in watching it. He is a fan and has seen all the parts while I haven't even bothered to watch the first part itself. 

I also fell asleep once I realized there is no sex and Tom Cruise does not strip. I always thought the action was just foreplay for something better coming up. Apparently, that isn't how action movies work. Or maybe am confusing action with porn. 

Minions

It has been a weekend filled with terrible movies. Wait, does that mean KC is my lucky charm when it comes to movies? Damn it. This is not good news. 
KC and his friend R are minion fans... so much so that they keep spamming me on fb with the minion stickers. While I don't even remember them from Despicable Me. We wanted to watch this movie but there has not been enough time. I watched it on Friday evening alone.

Kingsman : The Secret Service

An acquaintance raved about this movie on facebook and I decided to spend money on it. Whenever I watch a movie recommended by someone I go out of my way to like it. Very much unlike my usual bitchy self. But reading some reviews I was less inclined to watch it. I asked KC if we should watch Coffee Bloom instead but he was too lazy to read reviews of another movie and make a decision. So, we watched this one.

It's a spy movie based on the comic book The Secret Service. It stars Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cane, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton and Sophie Cookson. 

Fifty Shades of Grey

I was supposed to watch this flick with a friend at a late night show. But the reviews were very off putting. I did not want to spend money and time watching a flick which glorifies rape. 
After checking everyday I found a decent torrent in English today. In fact, I even managed to unlock a badge on the torrent site since I have visited so frequently last few days.

I deliberately did not read the book. The last book where the sex made me sick was written by Shobha De. Her books give me a yuck feeling and yet I read them. They make me feel so sick afterwards that am glad she has stopped releasing books. I didn't want to read a book which makes me feel sick about sex. And according to many reviews that's what the books are about. 

The movie stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey. It is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. 

Roy

I won't get into the story because I didn't watch it long enough to tell you what it is actually about. During the promos itself, I knew Ranbir Kapoor would not be able to carry this one on his shoulders what with non actors like Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandes in leading roles.

I don't understand why Jacqueline is signed for movies. She cannot even speak Hindi or act. Is there a dearth of good looking actresses who can speak and understand the language and can act. Serious dearth, I guess. 

Shamitabh

The movie starts with Dhanush as a superstar getting interviewed by the media and he is speaking in Amitabh's voice.

Birdman

I downloaded Birdman and Foxcatcher after watching the Golden Globes. Watched Birdman last night because it is  shorter than Foxcatcher. By 15 mins but I didn't have too much time.

The Interview

'The Interview' is Sony's most successful release online till date. I don't need to tell you 'Why'. The whole hacking thing has only made the film more successful. Because the fact is it is a pretty shitty movie and would not have garnered so many eyeballs otherwise. I wouldn't be surprised if this was all a publicity stunt. And I wouldn't be surprised if the whole PK debate is also a publicity stunt. Yeah, I have become quite cynical. But people and their motives will never cease to surprise me, and not in a good way.

The Babadook

I got Interstellar but this movie went right over my head. 99% of the reviews online are positive and I don't know why. WHY? 

The movie is about a depressed widow- Amelia played by Essie Davis. She lost her husband in an accident on the way to the hospital for delivery, She has a son Samuel played by Noah Wiseman. Amelia is depressed, stressed and over worked. While Samuel is scared of monsters in his room. He has built weapons to defend himself and ends up hurting a kid in school. Both mother and son have a lot of problems they need to deal with. In comes Mr Babadook, a monster in a children's book. At first Amelia does not believe the story but slowly starts sensing Babadook's presence. And then Babadook wants Amelia to kill Samuel but Samuel asks her to fight the monster within her. Which she does. 

Meenaxi : Tale of 3 Cities

While watching this flick day before yesterday I realized I have watched it earlier. Yes, that happens. I watched it for the 2nd time anyway. 

The movie released in 2005 and is directed by M.F Hussain. It stars Tabu, Raghuvir Yadav and Kunal Kapoor. 

Dharavi

I watched this movie a few weeks back and am reviewing it only now. For some reason, I have 2 CDs of this movie... yep, de cluttering is on the cards. 
The movie stars Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit and directed by Sudhir Mishra.

Jobs

I knew this movie bombed but I still wanted to watch it. Jobs was a fascinating man... a horrible human being but he led an interesting life. 

I managed to watch it last night and there are sooooo many problems with this movie. In fact, I cannot of think of one thing this flick got right. 

Sonali Cable

This is another movie I wanted to watch despite the bad reviews... because it stars Rhea Chakraborty and Ali Fazal. I, first, watched Rhea when she had participated and won a reality show... something like Miss India but for teenagers. She used be a gawky but charming teenager then. Well, she has turned out to be super hot and am so proud of her... like I had anything to do with her looks or success. I loved her in Mere Dad ki maruti and wanted to watch her as a lead in this one.

Interstellar

Before I get into what the movie is about... let me do a little bashing because this flick which wasted 3 precious hours of my life. Yesterday was supposed to be a celebration. I was going to spend a nice time at dinner... maybe pick up a burger at Burger King.. and then a doughnut (with the glaze wiped off because I find it too sweet) at Krispy Kreme and have 2 desserts. I didn't realize its a 3 hour movie which started half an hour late. I mean, why the hell would a Hollywood movie be 3 hours long? Why? Why? Why?

Happy Ending

Why would anyone want to watch a movie called 'Happy Ending'? Why would anyone pay to watch it? Some of life's questions I have no answer to.

The movie stars Saif Ali Khan, Illeana D'Cruz, Kalki, Ranvir Shorey and Govinda. I watched this movie only for Govinda and he was on screen for less than 5 mins in that hour. Yep, I turned it off after that.

Kill Dil

I had decided not to watch this movie after Sahil Rizwan (of The Vigil Idiot fame... don't know Vigil Idiot? You are living under a rock) posted a nasty comment on twitter. "Thank God"; I thought. "Money saved". But then Anupama Chopra gave it 3 stars. AC is the most reliable reviewer there is. Even though she is married to Vidhu Vinod Chopra and so is connected to Bollywood, her reviews are unbiased. In the times of paid reviews she is an anomaly.

Rang Rasiya

I wanted to watch this flick in the theatre but there was no time and watched it at home instead.
The movie stars Randeep Hooda, Nandana Sen, Feryna Wazheir and Paresh Rawal. It is an adaptation of Ranjit Desai's novel Raja Ravi Varma.

Bazaar

I came across this flick on itunes and decided to watch it. It stars Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Farooq Shaikh, Supriya Pathak and Bharat Kapoor. It released in 1982 (before I was born) and addresses the issue of men from Gulf buying young, nubile girls from poor parents.
The issue still remains... I know of women who were/almost were given off to rich, not so great men (old/fat/balding) because the parents were poor.
