I have read the novel by Jane Austen but never watched the movie. Watched it today. Emma stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma and Jeremy Northam as Mr Knightley.
Emma lives with her old father. Her sister is married and stays away. She finds a match for her governess and she marries and moves away from her house. Emma decides that she is good at match making and decides to find someone for Mr Elton- the minister who performs the wedding. She tries to match him with Harriet- her friend who is poor and does not have parents- disadvantages in that society for women trying to get married. But Mr Elton is interested in Emma and proposes to her. She rejects him and consoles Harriet.
After many ups and downs, Emma and Knightley- her childhood friend realize they are in love and get married while Harriet marries another guy who has loved her for a long time.
The movie Aisha (starring Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol) is based on this novel. I liked the movie... it was very entertaining. But after watching Emma I realized many characters were not well developed. Aisha comes across as a spoilt brat throughout while in Emma she has good qualities as well and is acknowledged for the same. The relationship between Aisha and Abhay does not really come out well... I never saw him appreciating her for anything. While in Emma, even when Knightley disagreed with her ... he was nice to her and they were genuinely good friends.
Overall, Emma is a good movie and it was nice to watch a period film after so long.
