Even though we were exhausted yesterday, I wanted to watch this movie. Because need to relax today.
Relaxing = gym time + swimming time + badminton time + salon time + manicure pedicure time (at home)
We all know the original Byomkesh Bakshi series and the dashing Rajat Kapoor in it. Our generation has grown up on it. This movie is based on that character.
The movie has been directed and partly produced by Dibakar Banerjee. I don't think Dibakar has made even one mediocre movie till date. All his movies have been brilliant and he is one of the few directors whose bad movies I would pay to watch. Yep, I would pay double too. He is that good.
The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari, Swastika Mukherjee, Divya Menon, Neeraj Kabi and Meiyang Chang.
The story is about Bhuvan (Anand Tiwari) whose father is missing and he approaches Byomkesh (Sushant) to help him find his father. The search for the father, leads Byomkesh to a dead body stashed in a machine, local politicians, a boarding house, Chinese smugglers, Japanese army, a dancer and spy- Anguri Devi (Swastika), politician's sister (Divya), an undercover cop (Meiyang) and the boarding house owner (Neeraj).
Everytime Byomkesh interrogates someone, he/she ends up dead. The killer is smarter than Byomkesh and always one step ahead.
The best part- it's not over. There is scope for a sequel.
I loved the style of the movie. It's contemporary even though set in Kolkata in the 40s. There isn't one thing that is out of place. Not one. And that is quite an achievement considering how most movies don't bother with details. Sushant Singh Rajput plays Byomkesh to the hilt. You don't think it's Sushant in Byomkesh's role... you feel it's Byomkesh himself (unlike Farhan in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag... ugh). Neeraj Kabi as the villain is awesome. He is just too good. Anand Tiwari is an underrated actor. I love watching him in supporting roles.
The background score is soooo good but then it is Sneha Khanwalkar and she is anything but boring when it comes to her music.
What the film lacks is a fast pace. I stopped caring for all the details after a while. The plot was too convoluted for me specially since I was tired. In fact, I fell asleep during the crucial climax scene. It didn't matter who did what and why. Hope Dibakar takes care of that in the next instalment.
Do not miss this movie.
