I watched Arth again last night. KC had not watched it and was hooked after sometime. In today's time, the story will not seem unique 'coz there have been so many remakes.
The movie is loosely based on Mahesh Bhatt's affair with Parveen Babi. Apparently, Parveen was pissed off after watching the flick.
The movie is about Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who is married to Pooja (Shabana Azmi). She married him when she was 21 years. He is a struggling film maker and they have to keep shifting homes 'coz he cannot keep a job. Pooja is an orphan who craves for security and stability. Things turn well for her when Inder buys a house. But, there is a twist. He is having an affair with an actress- Kavita (Smita Patil) and she pays for the house. Inder walks out on Pooja. She moves out of the house and starts living in a working women's hostel. Life is not easy for her... she finds a friend in Raj (Raj Kiran) who is a struggling singer. He falls in love with her... but she is too heart broken to reciprocate.
On the other hand, things are not going well for Inder. Kavita has psychological problems... he even divorces Pooja to make Kavita feel secure.
In the end, Pooja adopts her maid's daughter (the maid had killed her husband) and Kavita walks out on Inder. Her reason was that... if he can walk out on his 7 year marriage, he can very well walk out on her.
I loved the flick... the actors are genuine... the emotions so real.... there is nothing fake about it. The songs (mainly ghazals) are awesome. The end is ahead of its times... the heroine chooses to adopt a daughter on her own... while the other heroine walks out on the hero.
A must watch... if you haven't seen it already.
