This is undoubtedly my favourite Anurag Kashyap movie. I can watch it over and over again without getting bored.
Directed and written by Anurag Kashyap, it stars Kay Kay Menon, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu Singh, Aditya Srivastav, Jesse Randhawa, Deepak Dobriyal, Ayesha Mohan, Mahi Gill and Piyush Mishra.
Dilip (Raj Singh Chaudhary) is a law student in a small town in Rajasthan. He rents a room with Ransa (Abhimanyu) and becomes friends with him. During a ragging incident, he meets Anuja (Jesse). Duki Bana (Kay Kay) is a King of the place but after independence his father's titles, lands and wealth had to be given to the government. He is trying to start a revolution against the government of India and dreams of a separate land called "Rajputana".
The entire movie is about power and politics. Everyone is trying to get somewhere except Dilip, Ransa and Anuja.
Karan (Aditya) and Kiran (Ayesha) are illegitimate siblings of Ransa. They are trying to get somewhere so that their identity is more than their illegitimacy. They will go out of their way to do anything to fulfil their ambitions - kill, use people, switch loyalties. In fact, Karan is not above pimping out his sister.
And like Ayesha tells Dilip in the end "Why do you think everyone is using me? What if I am using everyone else?"
Nobody is black or white... everyone has shades of grey. Even Dilip. Except maybe Anuja but that is because we don't know who she is and what she wants.
There is so much in the movie that I can write for 10 days and 10 nights and still have lots to say.
Piyush Mishra as Prithvi Bana is amazing. His lyrics are too good. I loved the songs and their lyrics. I watched it with subtitles so managed to understand parts of them. The half man and half woman who follows Prithvi Bana always manages to boggle my mind. Who is he? What does he represent? Maybe someday I will meet Anurag and ask him.
All the actors are fabulous. All of them. Perfect casting. Not a word out of place.
