Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I had asked for movie recommendations on twitter for the long weekends and Ritesh suggested this one. After a long day of sightseeing KC and I watched this on the Ipad in Udaipur.

The movie stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Dunst, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson.

Jim plays Joel Barish, a rather boring, unassuming, unexciting and lonely guy. Kate plays Clementine, an impulsive, wild, risk taking lady whose mind changes as fast as her hair colour. Both meet and sparks fly. They start dating and are very much in love. But like any relationship they hit a few bumps, start fighting and in a fit of anger Clementine contacts Lacuna, Inc where Kristen, Mark, Tom and Alijah work.
Lacuna Inc erases memories of any person. They are of course packed around Valentine's when lovers want to do away with bad memories of a bad relationship. Clementine gets her memories erased and when Joel finds out, he is hurt and decides to do the same. Most of the movie is about Joel's memories while they are getting erased. We see his relationship with Clementine in reverse... first the bad and then the good. During the process he decides he does not want to end things with Clementine but it's too late. He tries and tries but all the memories are gone. And then he and Clementine meet as strangers and sparks fly again.

Do they get back together? Of course, they do.

The movie questions things like-

  • Would sparks fly again with your lover if you meet him/her after a few years?
  • Would you still get together?
  • Is love about the person or the circumstance?
  • What if you lose your love?
  • At what point should you give up on your relationship?
The best part is the movie is not shown linearly. It moves back and forth between flashbacks but never gets confusing. That is quite a feat because the whole premise is slightly difficult to understand.

The movie has been written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry.

This is a must watch romantic movie and I was glued throughout. Kate looks beautiful and Jim is very good in the complex role.
