I am Offended

I watched this documentary last night. It has been made by Jaideep Verma as a hobby over a period of 2 years and released on youtube. The release while the AIB Roast uproar happening is just a coincidence.

The documentary is about the current comedy scene in India- not just stand up comedians but writers, cartoonists and movie actors too.

It talks to so many people- Jug Suraiya, Tanmay, Khamba, Ashish Shakya, Rohan Joshi, Sapan Verma, Sahil Shah, Varun Grover, Cyrus Broacha, Rajneesh Kapoor, Aditi Mittal, Neeti Palta, Johnny Lever, Hrijesh Varjee, Vir Das, Raju Srivastav, Sanjay Rajoura, Anuvab Pal etc etc.

The other day I wondered on my blog- What is the purpose of comedy? Just a few laughs? Why am I spending money on it?
This documentary has answered the questions. The good part is most comedians take their job seriously. Their purpose is not just to laugh but to talk about issues in a humorous way. Very few of them use cuss words to replace jokes.

I loved it when Varun Grover said that Farhan Akhtar was getting 40 lakh/episode to say his lines and he wasn't even saying them that well. So, he decided to become a comedian since he would be able to say the lines more convincingly.

Another thing that struck me was how we are moving backwards. Remember Movers and Shakers? Remember Shekhar Suman cracking jokes on everything and anything? Even politicians? Do you think that show could be aired today? Nope. Not a chance. We are not progressing but regressing.

The documentary is not the best thing I have seen but since am interested in this topic it was a good watch.
